History is not merely a list of ‘things that happened’, rather it is the context, the reason, for modern life - The way we live, the cultures we have developed and the trajectory we are on…
Archaeologists examine the buildings, the things, the physical rubbish of history - evidence of how people lived. Rather than confirming what we already know, archaeologists are in the business of finding WHAT IS NEW ABOUT THE PAST… What is new about us!
The best way to learn about the past is to show how it is relevant to our lives today.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle | Gameplay Trailer: Archaeologists React
Dah-key-ah
He’s not a good source. He says things like “Ibn Bin Khalid was undefeated and never lost a battle, and was the only person ever to do so save one ancient king.”
Everyone corrects you when you say Caesar, but no one does it for Cicero.
One has to be careful when criticising pronunciation. He didn't say 'DAY-see-uh', he said 'DAY-shuh'. That's just a minor quibble, though. More importantly, modern-day Italians would say 'DA-tcha'. A hard 'c' precedes 'a', 'o' or 'u', whereas a soft 'c' precedes 'e' or 'i'. So, for example, Cicero is pronounced 'TCHEE-tcheh-rro', whereas _candela_ is pronounced 'kahn-DEH-la'. However, Caesar is now Cesaro, pronounced 'TCHEH-zah-rro', abandoning the 'a' after the 'c'.
It's like when your watching a reaction video on your countries thing and the reacting guy butchers some name and wonders how it is pronounced, then the guy in the video in question also mispronounces and the reaction guy goes like"ah so thats how its said"
"The guy you incorrectly called" was enough to know what this guy is all about
I would have let it go except for the fact he was sh!ting on people as ignorant
BAD NEWS! what? The Dacia Sandero has been delayed! Oh No! Anyway...
Why "likely inflated"?
He’s not even pronouncing it correctly while lecturing about the correct pronunciation. There’s no Z in “caesar” voicing the /s/ in between vowels in an English thing not a Latin thing. He’s also aspirating the initial /k/ sound which also is normal in English but absent in Latin. Both Us in /u/ should be pronounced like “oo” never “uh” and the S sound needs to be retracted further in the mouth This guy is the epitome of bragging about being wrong on something. He’s like Neil degrades Tyson but if Tyson was the same person but actually was terrible at math and science. How this guy gets work is beyond me Also you are not pronouncing Dacia right either. It should be pronounced “DAH-kee-ah”. As never make the sound “ey” in classical Latin they always make “ah” that’s why “ai” makes “eye” (literally “ah-ee together with no gap) If people are going to be pedantic about how to pronounce stuff the “real” way they probably should learn what they’re talking about. There’s been centuries of scholarship to reconstruct classical first century Latin phonology and its surprisingly not hard to learn. You can literally find everything you need on Google and learn every essential rule in a single day. This is why I hate people that insist others should pronounce it the “real” way, because they assume that there’s is correct when, like in this video, they actually make quite a few mistakes because they don’t actually know the language like they think they do.
A none native tree felled , get a real perspective trees undermine walls!
Dacia has had various pronounciations over time. Languages change over time, best example is English language. Writing and speaking don't match. Google it😂
It's interesting how _Caesar_ became synonymous with the office of the emperor (well, technically it was Augustus who implemented it as an official title, but still) and how it influenced other languages: _Kaiser_ ,german for Emperor- (Kai) _Tzar_ ,russian for Emperor- Im sure that there are a ton of other examples but those are the ones that springs to mind.
Yes, you spell "c" as "k" correctly, but if you gonna spell in that way, then you have to spell "dAkia" instead of "daeikia"
So many professors out their ,,boring
sure he killed 1.000.000, just like there were 1.000.000 Persians at Thermopylae
Romanian here former Dacia you are both wrong
How do they know the numbers killed ?
They don’t. It’s impossible to know, at best we have historians who themselves weren’t eyewitnesses, though eyewitness testimony isn’t worth much to begin with. At worst we have commentaries by the people who supposedly committed these acts, which why wouldn’t someone inflate their own numbers to sound more terrifying and powerful. It’s at best guestimation, and a lot of archeology and anthropology, if 2/3rds of Gaul was depopulated we would expect to see that reflected , but such evidence just doesn’t exist.
22:00 I’m stopping here. Mostly because I feel like you guys are using very negative language about the public’s interest in archaeology. How about instead of confronting the average Joe, you indulge him. Instead of dealing with public interest, revel in it. The public is quite literally looking for a reason to put you guys into the spotlight. And you’re acting like freaking vampires afraid of the sun. Also, I found Flints approach to be extremely unique in that for the most part he brought facts and the receipts to back it up, while having his person and colleagues attacked for 80% of a poorly conducted (on Joes part) debate. He didn’t stoop to Graham’s level terribly damn often. Certainly he but his tongue several times when he could have fired back all cylinders go for Ad Homs. Flint was polite and professional, he was a damn choir boy compared to the man babies he was sharing a room with.
#iamverysmart
My defense of his pronunciation of Dacia is this: academic, intellectual, and imperial Latin is different from place names that have roots in (now dead or dying) Latin sister or daughter languages, like dalmatian and its sister pre-Italian languages
If it was English, it would’ve been fine.
Haha true 😁
No "k" 😂
Its where the Germans get the word "Kaiser" for their Monarch!
I hate it when someone thinks that their pronunciation of an ancient language is correct without ever hearing how it was really spoken. He also mispronounced France.
Names change pronunciation as they go from language to language all the time. I don't care if you prefer the English or Classical form of Caesar but to put down people who choose the other option is stupid.
It is Dachia! By the way, the name of the car made in Romania! Romania came from the original Roma!
Gaius Julius Caeser Söze.
Surely he would be citing the commentaries written by Caesar himself no? And not just Plutarch? It does say something incredible like 2 million in the commentaries right?
Actually all is wrong as you pronounce latin in a english way. Its not daykia its more then likely da-ki-a . If you wanna be a stickler do it right.
"True to Caesar!"
‘There’s always someone, somewhere, with a big nose who knows, who trips you up and laughs when you fall’. - The Smiths, Cemetery Gates.
The most valuable thing I learned when taking history in college was that if the professor sounds condescending and cocky, be on your guard and fact-check them later. They're not necessarily wrong, but I don't trust jerks.
I remember this from the Asterix & Obelisk comics and movies
Please. Find a dictionary. Or Google it. Learn the definition of Pedantry. Full stop.
This dudes in the legion lmfao
Would it be DAY-Kee-Ya or DAH-Kee-Ah
Isnt it K-Aeser when speaking in latin but C-easer in English?
I feel like there was a really popular german orator in the 30s that got everybody hyped, not on facts, but just because he sounded good. Now, I'm in no way saying that a history professor at an acclaimed university teaching thousands of students bad history is in any way as bad as being the leader of the German Nationalist Socialist movement but.... oh wait. That's exactly what I'm claiming. I'm claiming that influential orators spewing misinformation to the masses is extremely dangerous and can lead to global war and genocide. Ooops better not curtail this dangerous practice, better just send more youths into debt to learn falsehoods taught by n*zi sympathizers. Where are all these antisemitic riots taking place? At universities? Must be a coincidence.
Professor back of milk cartoons.
This guy makes stuff up as he goes
Just found ya and already big fan 😂🫡🙏
My nicca conquered Germany
This professor is a total crackpot. So misinformed.
This kaiser guy sounds pretty fucking based!
Not saying the fact that Caesar was helped by other Celtic tribes in "murdering" their people
Excellent advice
I think maybe people should just pronounce things the way they're pronounced instead of trying to act as if language is objective rather than intersubjective. Look, my grandparents were Dutch, and so I happen to know that the Dutch pronunciation of Van Gogh is something like "Fien Hoch", but if I pronounce it like that people outside of the Netherlands are gonna be like "are you alright? Do you need a glass of water?"
He still mispronounced the name 😂😂😂
